Sties and the Free Trade Market in Europe

The first of January 1993 the free trade marked inside EU was opened. Then the EU introduced common customs duty and vat rules for the whole EU, and customs offices at the borders between every single EU country were shut down. Because Norway is not a member of the EU the Norwegian fish carriers got big problems with customs clearings. So far the fish had been customs cleared in the country of the recipient. Some customs offices inside the countries were still working, but only at the ordinary day time.
Opening hours was not compatible with time for unloading the fish.
As a fish carrier Sties had to find a solution to the problem. We wanted to have the fish customs cleared by customs at the outer border of the EU. I was head of Sties customs department and got a lot of hard work to find the solution to get the fish custom cleared at time we needed. The authorities in the EU had no solution.
We had to create a solution that the EU authorities would accept.
After several months of intensive work studying the new EU rules of customs clearings and VAT we found a solution to get our goods custom cleared at the outer EU border. After some small adjustments, the EU authorities gave their accept.
At the first of January 1993 Sties was the only carrier who had finished a new routine for Customs clearings into the EU. The 3 of January 1993 three trucks from Sties as the first fish carrier left Norway to practise the new customs clearings solution. Sties gave once again the premise for the whole business.
There was a great suspense attached to this solution with customs clearings at the outer EU border. Therefore Norwegian TV sent a team to follow driver Håkon Wæhle and his truck from Norway to Italy . The carriage was a big success.  The TV report was showed in the news the following Saturday evening. At the same time the news paper Aftenposten sent a journalist with one of the other trucks, driven by Geir Strande, watching the first carriage into a new EU. This rapport of a successful carriage you could read in the paper 16. January 1993.
